Barrow in Furness Flower Club
About us:
Barrow-in-Furness is situated on the coastal edge of the Furness Peninsula, in the South of Cumbria. Surrounded on three sides by water: Morecambe Bay, the Irish Sea and the Dudden Estuary, and with the Lakeland Hills forming the backdrop to the eastside.
Over the years many flower arrangers have demonstrated their art but one of the earliest and best remembered was Jean Taylor, and it was through our club that Derek Bridges and John Tovey joined forces to demonstrate Flowers and Food at an Area day.
The club has been called upon many times since it’s formation to stage flowers, from decorating rooms used by the Queen when visiting Barrow to launch various ships, to Holker Hall and Levens Hall and Chelsea Flower Show in 1977, and many other occasions throughout the years.
If you would like to visit our club we meet on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at 2.00pm in St. Paul’s Church Hall, Hawcoat Lane, Barrow-in-Furness, you would be made most welcome.
2009 saw the club celebrate its Sapphire Anniversary, and to celebrate the occasion we held a special luncheon at Clarence House Hotel, Dalton, with our speaker being Judith Blacklock the editor of the Flower Arranger magazine. Judith is a local lass and the daughter of one of our founder members, Joan Ward, who still regularly attends our monthly meetings.
Our Sapphire luncheon was enjoyed by the club members and the day was finished off by an entertaining talk by Judith Blacklock who went on to show us how to make some simple but very effective flower designs, these were raffled to the delight of the club members.
The cake was cut by two of the founder members, Joan Ward and Mary Fisher, who were then presented with bouquets of orchids.
Many congratulations go to Noreen Fishburn one of our club members who with the team from the Northwest area represented NAFAS at Chelsea and they won a Gold medal for their display entitled "Would Yew Waste" The photos of the display can be seen on the NAFAS website
National Flower Arranging Day on May 6th was celebrated by the club, by arranging flowers at our local civic centre, Forum 28. in Duke St. Barrow.
Table arrangements were placed on all the tables in the coffee shop, also on the reception desk and as it was silver screening day for the cinema, a pianist was playing in the foyer so flowers were placed on the piano. The flowers were then raffled and the proceeds went to the Mayor's charity fund.
Small cards were placed on each arrangement and dotted about, advertising Barrow-in-Furness Flower Club with details of club meetings and venue, with the hope of attracting new members.
