Manchester Flower Lovers Guild
About us:
Our Guild was formed in October 1956 when a group of like-minded flower lovers got together under the guidance of Mrs A. J. Cooke of Leicester. At the time Mrs Cooke was Vice-Chairman of the National Association of Flower Arrangement Societies of Gt.Britain and was herself a Mancunian. She elicited the very substantial help of Mr R. C. McMillan MBE who was Director of Parks for Manchester City Council. He was instrumental in setting up the Floral Art Shows throughout the City especially the Manchester Flower Show at Platt Fields Park.
The inaugural meeting of the Guild was held in the City Art Gallery and with an annual membership of £1 per annum the first flower arrangement club in the North was formed. The Guild met for many years in the centre of Manchester at the Town Hall in Albert Square, where the membership increased. In later years parking became a problem in the area and made things difficult for the demonstrators and their equipment and the Guild was forced to find new premises. Many of the members who attended at the Town Hall left to form clubs in their own areas.
Since then we have met in Withington and in Fallowfield but are now settled in Chorlton. In 2006 we celebrate our 50th Anniversary; we feel so lucky to be thriving with a good membership and a friendly happy atmosphere together with a hard-working committee
Our membership enjoy demonstrations, workshops, day and evening excursions, charity fund raising and coffee mornings. Many talented members have helped with local flower festivals. The annual membership is £16 and Visitors £3.50 per session, new members are always welcome. Join us at our monthly meetings held on the first Monday of each month at 7.30 St Werburgh's Parish Church Hall, St Werbergh's Road, Chorlton
