The West Lancashire Flower Club

About us:

The Club began with a meeting in 1953 when Mrs Dorothy Tuffin was invited to demonstrate some Christmas Arrangements, as soon as the meeting was over names of those wishing to join were taken, numbers quickly reached 100. The first official meeting as a Club though was in January 1954, the membership increased over the years until it reached 250 and at that point it was decided that this should be the full membership and a waiting list was started. There is a full history of the beginnings of the club featuring familar names from the past founders of flower clubs in the UK.

Currently, The West Lancashire Flower Club has a membership of 223 members.  We meet at St James' Memorial Hall, Lulworth Road, Birkdale, Southport at 2 p.m. every third Wednesday of the month, except for September when we move to the fourth Wednesday, no meetings are held in either August or December.

We have a committee of thirteen which is led by our current Chairman Aurea Russell. Our Vice Chairman is Pat Armstrong, whom many North West Area members will know well. Club Secretary is Margaret Fletcher and our Treasurer is Josephine Yates, a lady who needs no introduction!

We have a thriving Sales Table at each monthly meeting and our Publications section is also very well supported.

Our annual subscription is £21.00 and £3.50 per meeting for guests, who can only attend three meetings without full membership. No guests are permitted at the November meetings due to lack of space in our Hall.

2009 Highlights:

2009 was our Emerald Anniversary year and it was a busy one!

Our Flower Festival at St.John's Church Birkdale in October was wonderful. Watch this space for photographs of the spectacular designs created by our talented members, these will appear in the gallery soon.

Hot on the heels of the Festival was our Emerald Anniversary lunch at the Royal Clifton Hotel, Southport. In true West Lancs tradition there were lots of posh frocks and hats!! We were delighted to be joined by Area President, Gillian Platt and Area Chairman David Ryland. Tony Cleaver was our guest speaker.

Our chosen chairty for 2009 was The Alzheimer's Society and at our Christmas Demonstration in November, we were able to present them with a cheque for almost £5,000.

Grateful thanks from the Officers and Committee for all the amazing work our members produced at our Festival and also to everyone at St.John's who were so hospitable. In addition, thanks go to those members who supported all our events in 2009 and who gave so generously to the future of our club and to our chosen charity.

2010 - A new year and a new decade.

We are looking forward to a new calander of events at our club. Our January meeting started with a beautiful demonstration by Liz Broad. So nice to see lovely fresh flowers without a hint of tinsle in sight!

Once again we have a full calander of events, perhaps not as frantic as in our Emerald Year but just as many exciting demonstrators to look forward to.
