Workington Flower Club
About us:
Workington Flower Club was formed in 1976. We have a NAFAS demonstrator almost every month, who each create about 6 arrangements which then become the raffle prizes for that evening.
We are a small club with approximately 90 members. We meet in th0e Masonic Hall, Gordon Street, Workington, CA14 2EN, at 7pm on the last Wednesday in the month, every month except July. There is a nice big room with comfy padded chairs and bar facilities.
In addition to our monthly meetings we run a couple of trips during the year visiting gardens, flower festivals, or garden centres. We have held, or assisted, in several flower festivals over the years and in 2004 we assisted in the flower festival at Hayton Church which was very successful. In 2007 we were one of many clubs who contributed to the superb flower festival at Mirehouse, near Bassenthwaite.
In 2008 we organised a competition for flower arrangements as part of the "Paint The Town Red" weekend festival. We also made a major contribution to a Flower Festival at St Paul's Church in Seaton, which was a great success. In 2010 we organised the centenary flower festival at St Mary's Church, Maryport. It is a large church and with help from ladies from other local clubs the festival was a huge success and a joy to behold.
One of our founder members, Martha Salisbury, celebrated her 100th birthday in April 2008. The club presented her with a bouquet of flowers, and thanked her for helping to set up the wonderful club that we now enjoy being a part of.
2009 saw us celebrating the Golden Anniversary of NAFAS in May with a big cake and champagne at our members night. In July we held a Strawberry Coffee Morning in aid of Breast Cancer Care and raised £300. At our November Open Night we held a collection for Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team who had worked so hard during the floods, and were able to donate £120 to that excellent organistion to help them replace their equipment that had all been contaminated by the flood water they had been working in.
In 2011 we celebrated our Coral Anniversary on 23rd February with a special cake and a glass of wine for everyone. That night our demonstrator was Mrs Patti Dawson who incorporated coral into her designs. It was a great night, enjoyed by all.
Since then we played a major part in the very successful Flower Festival at Flimby Church. Where, despite the rather poor weather over that weekend, the Church managed to raise over £3,000 and hopefully gained some new members.
Already this year we have helped out at flower Festivals at Flimby and Plumland churches.
We are currently preparing to give a helping hand at the West Newton Church Flower Festival, which opens to the public on 17th November. Please come along and give them your support, it is bound to be worth a visit.
Our large Open Night this year was held on 14th September at St Joseph's school hall, when we had Mr Jonathan Moseley from Derbyshire, the celebrated National Demonstrator, who gave a wonderful demonstration to around 140 ladies who all throughly enjoyed their evening.
We are always pleased to greet new members or visitors, who can be sure of a friendly and enjoyable evening.
